Slow Cooked Gammon

Its been a while since I did a slow cooker post, my time with Granny is more and meals that are simpler are on the cards more.

The fab thing with this one is two ingredients, one pot, switch on and cook. No fuss, no effort, and a really thrifty meal.

The gammon was £2.99 in the butchers, it weighs 1.6kg. So a reasonable sized pot  is needed, luckily my Judges slow cooker is a 5 litre, I would say it would fit in a 3 litre cooker.

The result is a tender, melt in the mouth ham, the apple juice used to cook in is not needed, adds no real sweetness but does make the joint brown. I know people use cider but this is way cheaper and gives the same effect.
Coke can be used, it does give a sweeter edge and for those on a Slimming World, diet coke or diet apple fizzy drinks make a syn free slow cook gammon dish.

If you buy ham this is a much cheaper way to get a great ham sarnie. Sliced thinly its a good week of ham sandwiches. But sliced thick in good baked bread its a real treat.

Fabulous for Christmas, do not be conned into buying the big Christmas joints in the supermarkets, look around the butchers now and freeze one.

I served mine with mash, cheese sauce and peas, the Irish in me demands this comfort food every month at least.

OK so onto the making!! It really is easy food. You can soak the gammon in water if you don't like a salty taste.

One 1.5 kg or above Gammon joint.
200 ml of apple juice.

Add to the slow cooker, cook on low for 8 hours.

Rest for 20 minutes in foil.

Serve.
